Hosting an Autumn Equinox dinner party

I will always drag my feet when it comes to letting go of summer (swimming in mountain lakes and rivers will forever be the pinnacle of happiness for me) but there is such a magic in this time of year. Autumn Equinox marks the time when light and dark are balanced, just before the tipping point into our contemplative winter months. The fullness of the season is just asking to be celebrated--gardens brimming with the abundance of the harvest, rich saturation of light and our bellies full of warm summer memories.

I started a coven with some of my most mystical friends last year and we meet regularly to mark the Wheel of the Year festivals and be more in tune with the seasons.

When I thought about the best way to honor the Autumn Equinox, my main considerations were: 1) a seasonal feast 2) an outdoor gathering and 3) a tablescape that would incorporate the richness of harvest.

I started with the table and used the Lila Gingham Tablecloth to set the stage. There's no season that gingham doesn't complement but I especially love it through the cozy seasons.

Next, I gathered pumpkins, gourds and apples to represent the bounty. I love grabbing a mix of colors and gourds varieties (and the bumpier and warty-er, the better!)

I layered in candles and crystals to add light and magic. (I also incorporated these perfect-for-fall apple candlestick holders). One coven member has an especially beautiful crystal collection and brought citrine to add to the ambiance. Citrine felt absolutely perfect for the gathering as it represents abundance, just like this season. It's also been referred to as "the merchants stone," as shopkeepers dating back to ancient Greek, Roman and Egyptian times would keep it in their cash box to draw in wealth.

I finished with a seasonal centerpiece of willow branches, sunflowers and mums.

Guests were each invited to bring a seasonal dish and we feasted on caramel apples, homemade soups and a pumpkin olive oil cake with cinnamon cream cheese frosting.

After eating, we did a guided clearing meditation under the twinkle of of lights in the trees (I laid in the hammock!), and then finished with a simple spell to ward our names.

Welcome, autumn!
