How to Host a Magical Summer Solstice Party

How to Host a Magical Summer Solstice Party

In summer of 2008, I accidentally danced into a summer solstice party in Guerneville, California. A gang of girlfriends and I had gathered for a weekend of kayaking on the Russian River and on our walk home from dinner, we stumbled unbeknownst into a neighbor's garden party full of dancing, cheering and fun. They welcomed us with so much gusto. I've wanted to find a way to celebrate the peak of summer as intentionally as that delightful party, and here's where I'm starting.

Across cultures and time, people have gathered on summer solstice to mark the turning of the season. Bonfires were lit, flowers were woven into crowns, and communities came together to celebrate the sun at its peak before it begins its slow return toward darkness.

For this day, I lean into the celebration of light, abundance, and life at its fullest with a simple gathering that centers on connectedness--with nature and our loved ones.

Set the Scene: A Table Under the Open Sky

Begin with a table, or simply a blanket spread across the grass.

Layer it with textiles that feel soft and welcoming. Let the edges drape. Add candles, even before they’re needed, and a few loosely gathered flowers in small jars.

Nothing should feel too styled. The beauty of a solstice table is in its ease: like it came together naturally, without effort.

A Simple, Seasonal Menu

This is not a night for complicated cooking.

Think fresh bread, ripe fruit, simple salads, something sweet to share. Let guests bring a dish if they’d like—it adds to the feeling of abundance and community.

Pour lemonade, wine, or something sparkling. Keep it easy. Keep it joyful.

Create a Gentle Ritual

For thousands of years, the solstice has been marked with small, symbolic acts—ways of pausing to acknowledge the fullness of life and the turning of time.

You might invite your guests to write down an intention for the season ahead. Something they’re calling in, or something they’re ready to release.

As the sun begins to set, you can light a candle for each intention, or simply share them aloud if it feels right.

There’s no need for structure. The meaning is in the moment itself.

Dress the Part (Softly)

Encourage your guests to dress in a way that feels connected to the evening.

Flowing fabrics, bare feet, layers for when the air cools. Nothing formal, nothing fussy.

Just a shared sense of stepping slightly out of the everyday.

Let the Night Unfold

As the light begins to fade, something shifts.

Candles flicker. Conversations soften. Time stretches in that familiar, dreamlike way.

This is the heart of the gathering, the feeling of being together in a moment that feels both fleeting and timeless.

A Tradition Worth Keeping

Long after the plates are cleared and the candles have burned low, something lingers.

The summer solstice reminds us to pause at the height of things: to notice, gather and celebrate connection.
